Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

My first Doc Martens
I usually wear a size 7 for boots (and maybe 6.5 for some flats). For reference, I have two Frye boots with an almond shaped toe in size 7 (melissa lace up & carson oxford) and they fit perfectly. In comparison these Doc Martens in 5UK/7US women's fit a little bit wider but require little to no break in. I have been wearing these for about a week now and the only pain I've felt is the back of my calves where the top of the boot digs a little bit into my leg. It is softening up now and is no longer a problem. My feet fit so well in the boot that I feel I'm walking on practically nothing. Also should note that the bottom of the boot looks untouched despite having worn this boot every day through some rough and dirty ground.Love the slimmer last on this boot as well as the heel, makes it look a little bit more feminine and easier to style. Overall a great boot and I'm happy I got such an awesome deal on it!UPDATE APR 18 2016:Just wanted to update on the boots I bought over a year ago. I finally had to replace the laces that came with the boot as they were starting to fray. It held up pretty well considering how often I wear it. I think this is the most comfortable and versatile shoe I own as I have worn them for nearly every occasion. Despite constant wear the sole barely looks scuffed and I have worn this through some pretty rocky areas. Also, not too sure why I got a downvote for my review, I assume it's because I mentioned I got it at a good deal. I wasn't given this shoe at a discount for my review, I originally got it for ~$100 and saw there was a 20% off coupon for shoes for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I contacted Amazon to see if they would honor the new price and apply the coupon for my order and they did.

The most comfortable Dr. Martens shoe I own!
I ordered these Dr. Martens Clemency boots in black in a UK size 7/US size 9. My regular shoe size is a size 8.5 (US), but I typically buy a size 9 (US) to factor in the option to wear thick socks for warmth and comfort during the colder seasons. I own other Dr. Martens boots so I know what a challenge it is to break in these type of boots. I was pleasantly surprised that these Clemency Docs were very comfortable wearing with thick socks the first time I wore them around the house indoors and the shoe didn't feel too tight or too loose when walking around. I chose to wear them indoors so that I can try breaking them in, but they felt so comfortable that I just went ahead and wore them outdoors. I had no problems with the shoe fit, it was very flexible and comfortable to wear. The "Air Wair with Bouncing Soles" really made every step feel like I was walking on carpet all day long outside on hard surfaces. This is the most comfortable pair of Docs straight out of the box that I've ever owned. I recommend this shoe to anyone who is a Dr. Martens fan or someone that is looking to buy their first pair. The smooth black leather looks very nice. Another great feature that I love about the Clemency boot is the two-inch heel, it is high enough to give you a some height, but not too high that you feel uncomfortable walking in them for long periods of time. I love these boots and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for boots that are good quality, comfortable and look great with most outfits.

WOW
These boots are amazing. The leather is of good quality and although it's made in china with care I know they will last. I bought the black smooth in a UK7 and I am a U.S size 9-9.5 and my feet are a little wide. I was afraid the 9 would be too small but from experience I feel that Doc Marten's in a size ten are a bit overwhelming. I'm so glad I was wrong and i'm glad I went with my gut! My toes have enough space & my foot sits PERfECTLY in the shoe. Most people have complained of stiffness and the shoe being tight and slightly intense on the first wear but lucky for me right out of the box my feet melt. Don't get me wrong, they are stiff but not tight. The stiffness ebbs with continuous wear. I wish I could give you a fail safe formula on picking the right size but it depends. I would say in terms of length, size down but if you have a very wide foot size up. I hope this helps. The style- so cute, beautiful and hot hot hot. The heel gives it that sexy kick-ass femme fatale vibe that I love to exude. Shy or outgoing this boot works. You can pair it with skirts, casual dresses, jeans. Fall, spring and winter ( I hate shutting my feet up in the summer). Get these while the prices are still decent.

Brilliant Doc quality, with a little lift.
Two years ago, I developed major ankle pain for no readily apparent reason. I've always worn excellent, sensible shoes -- mostly Docs and Dansko -- but something had gone wrong. Post-tibial tendonitis was the diagnosis, a result of a knee injury that can't be much improved. My podiatrist told me to wear a low heel for the rest of my life, to abandon flat shoes and wear inserts. I thought I'd have to give up Docs for good.I've worn Docs for decades. I love them and know their quality and longevity. Getting that diagnosis was painful. Then I found these. The heel is about 2 inches, so just enough to provide the proper support for my injury. The leather is properly stiff but flexible, and gives excellent supplementary support. They've got appropriate space to add the necessary inserts to support my striking tendons. They look like Docs, they polish like Docs, and I expect they'll last like Docs. They were comfortable right out of the box.In winter, I wear these more than any other shoe, and they always look excellent, whether with dress pants or tights and skirts, or heavy leggings and long sweaters. The little heel pushes them just outside of industrial punk and into geek-chic. They don't get much wear in summer, but they actually don't look bad with bare legs and a short skirt. And I know that I'll have them for years because that's just what Docs do.

Order your US size
After a lot of stress wondering which size to order, I finally got an answer (I emailed the seller on Amazon directly to find out if the sizes listed to choose from were US or UK sizing). I have Doc Martens already and I've always had to order my UK size (I'm a size 8 US, but UK size is 6). So I was afraid I was going to order the wrong one ... site doesn't indicate. But now I know: they are US sizing. So if you're a size 8, order a size 8. Hope that clarifies for all. Other than that ... the boots were exactly as advertised and are fantastic. I love that Dr. Marten's offered a chunk heeled boot (without the extra chunk everywhere else ... I'm a bit old for that now). But the chunk heel is great ... by far my favourite Doc Martens ... comfortable and cool.

Me encantan
