Rock Solid Master Articulating Arm + Clamp Kit

I have super clamps from a couple of different companies including Manfrotto. This seems to be as solid and functional as the Manfrotto to me.I have only experimented with the Magic arm but it is very solid. I have only used the cheap small ones before I bought this. Mounting something as heavy as a camera with a heavy lens is a gamble on those. This one is much more solid than those. It will be much secure to attach a camera to this. I don't own the Manfrotto version of this so I can't tell how it compares to that but it doesn't seem likely that the Manfrotto version will be better than this one.

The articulating arm works very well and has teeth in the grip. I use the arm to hold a Lastolite Halo Compact reflector on light stand. Do need an adapter/coupling (Tether Tools 5/8 Female to 5/8 Female) works perfectly. I leave it attached to the arm and pop it in the light stand. By the way, the Lastolite Halo has a 1/4 20 built-in mount. I have attached a Manfrotto camera mount to the Halo, which allows me fast and easy mounting and dismounting of the reflector.As far as the super clamp goes, it slips in tubular applications. I believe it is because unlike the Manfrotto Super Clamps, Tether Tools does not have a rubber padding in the grip. Another thing, the included wedge can not be stored under the wing nut either.

For people not already familiar with the product and how it works, the single clamp locks the elbow joint and the ball joints on both ends. That's not intuitively obvious to the casual observer, and there are no instructions whatever packed with the product or available on the web site. Once I got past that hurdle and assembled the set, it's a pretty amazing device. I bought this with the L4 Universal Tablet holder to allow my Surface 3 Pro to be held in place so I can use it hands free following neck surgery. The clamp works best on either a pole or on a shelf with square edges. It's not as effective on a shelf that has a rounded edge. It does require tightening the knob at the elbow with significant torque to lock the 2+ pound Surface securely.

This was a bit pricey, but after getting it I can see why -- it's built like a tank! Amazingly solid and really works great for holding my iPad while shooting in the studio. I can also hold my 15" MacBook so I can shoot tethered using Lightroom. Tether tools builds quality products, well worth the cost.
